About the game of roulette (general rules)

The History of the Game

The first mentions of games with a spinning wheel date back to ancient times. For example, the ancient Greeks and Romans used spinning discs or shields for gambling.

In the 17th century, the French mathematician Blaise Pascal tried to create a perpetual motion machine, and although the project was unsuccessful, one of his inventions became the prototype of the roulette.

At the beginning of the 18th century, brothers François and Louis Blanc added a green sector 0 to the wheel to increase the casino's advantage. This is how classic roulette was born. The game quickly became popular in casinos in France and other European countries, especially in Monaco.

In the 19th century, roulette arrived in the United States, where it was modified. A second zero sector 00 was added to the American wheels to further increase the casino's advantage. American roulette has 38 sectors (with 0 and 00), unlike European roulette with 37 (only 0).

General Information

Roulette is one of the most popular gambling games in the world, symbolizing the casino atmosphere. Its name comes from the French word "roulette," which means "little wheel." The essence of the game is simple: players place bets on numbers, colors, or groups of numbers, and then a wheel with numbers from 1 to 36, alternating between red and black, and one or two green sectors with the number 0, is spun. A ball launched along the edge of the wheel stops in one of the pockets, determining the winning outcome.

There are two main types of roulette: European (with a single 0) and American (with 0 and 00). Roulette combines an element of randomness with the strategy of choosing bets, making it exciting for both beginners and experienced players. In the modern world, the game is available not only in land-based casinos but also online, where the popularity of roulette continues to grow thanks to its convenience and variety of game options.

Betting options

Bet on color (Red/Black)

Bet on color (Red/Black)

Betting on color in roulette is a simple and popular choice, especially among beginners. The player places a bet on which color the winning number will land: red or black. On the roulette wheel, 36 numbers are evenly distributed between these two colors, while the green sector 0 belongs to neither red nor black.

When winning, a bet on a color is paid at a ratio of 1:1, meaning the player doubles their initial bet. This type of bet is attractive due to its high probability of winning — about 48.6% in European roulette. This makes it a good choice for those who prefer minimal risks and want to enjoy the game without complex calculations.

Bet on even/odd

Bet on even/odd

A bet on even/odd in roulette is a simple choice where the player predicts whether the winning number will be even or odd. The wheel has 36 numbers evenly distributed between even and odd, while the green sector 0 does not belong to either category.

Bet on higher/lower

Bet on higher/lower

A bet on high/low in roulette involves choosing a range of numbers: low (1–18) or high (19–36). These ranges each include 18 numbers, and the green sector 0 does not belong to either category.

Bet on Dozens

Bet on Dozens

A dozen bet in roulette is the selection of one of three ranges of numbers: 1–12, 13–24, or 25–36. Each range includes 12 numbers. The green sector 0 does not belong to any of the dozens, which gives the casino a slight advantage.

In case of a win, the bet pays at a ratio of 2:1, tripling the player's investment. The probability of winning is approximately 32.4%, which makes this bet attractive for players seeking higher payouts compared to simple bets, such as on color or odd/even.

Bet on columns

Bet on columns

A column bet in roulette involves choosing one of the three vertical columns on the game table, each of which includes 12 numbers. The first column contains the numbers 1 4 7 ... 34, the second — 2 5 8 ... 35, and the third — 3 6 9 ... 36. The green sector 0 is not included in any column.

Bet on Six Line/Double Streets

Bet on Six Line/Double Streets

A double street bet in roulette covers six numbers located in two adjacent rows on the game board. For example, you can bet on numbers 4–9 or 13–18. To place such a bet, the chip is placed at the intersection of the border of the two rows.

When winning, the bet is paid at a ratio of 5:1, making it riskier but with a larger payout compared to simple bets. The probability of winning is about 16.2% since the bet covers 6 out of 37 numbers on the European wheel.

A bet on streets

A bet on streets

A street bet in roulette covers three consecutive numbers in a single row on the betting field. For example, you can place a bet on numbers 1 2 3 or 4 5 6 by placing the chip on the outer edge of the row where these numbers are located.

When winning, a street bet pays out at a ratio of 11:1, which means higher payouts compared to simpler bets, such as bets on color or odd/even. The probability of winning is about 8.1%, as the bet covers 3 out of 37 numbers on the European wheel.

Bet on a Straight/Single

Bet on a Straight/Single

A bet on a number in roulette is the most risky but also the most rewarding bet. The player selects a specific number from 0 to 36. The chip is placed directly on that number on the game table.

When winning, a bet on a number is paid at a ratio of 35:1, which means the player receives 35 times their bet. This makes such a bet very attractive for those seeking a big payout, however, the probability of winning is only about 2.7%, as the bet covers only one number out of 37 on the European wheel.

Split Bet

Split Bet

A split bet in roulette covers two numbers that are adjacent to each other on the betting layout. The player places a chip on the line that separates the two numbers. For example, you can bet on the numbers 11 and 14 or 33 and 36 by placing a chip on the border between them.

When winning, a split bet pays at a ratio of 17:1, offering higher payouts compared to straight bets, but the probability of winning is about 5.4%, as the bet covers two numbers out of 37 on the European wheel. A split bet is a compromise between risk and potential reward.

Bet on four neighboring numbers (Corner/Square)

Bet on four neighboring numbers (Corner/Square)

A square bet in roulette covers four numbers arranged in a square on the betting layout. The player places a chip at the intersection of the borders of these four numbers. For example, a square bet may include the numbers 23 24 26 27

When winning, a square bet pays at a ratio of 8:1, which means the player receives 8 times their bet. This bet covers four numbers out of 37 on the European wheel, and the probability of winning is approximately 10.8%. A square bet is a balanced option between risk and payouts.

A bet on the first four numbers (First Four)

A bet on the first four numbers (First Four)

The First Four bet in roulette covers the first four numbers on the betting layout: 0 1 2 3. This bet is placed at the intersection of these numbers, covering them all simultaneously.

When winning, the bet on First Four pays out at a ratio of 8:1, which provides payouts 8 times the original bet. The probability of winning is about 10.8%, as the bet covers 4 numbers out of 37 on the European wheel.

Trio Bet

Trio Bet

A trio bet in roulette covers three numbers, including 0, as well as two numbers from the first row, for example, 0 1 2 or 0 2 3. This bet is placed at the intersection of the boundary between the number 0 and the two adjacent numbers.

When winning, a trio bet pays out at a ratio of 11:1, offering higher payouts compared to simpler bets. The probability of winning is about 8.1%, as the bet covers three numbers out of 37 on the European wheel. A trio bet is a good choice for players who want to cover three numbers, including 0.

Voisins du Zero

This sector covers the numbers located around 0 on the wheel, including 16 numbers that are neighbors of the zero sector. Includes:

  • 02347121518192122252628293235
The bet on Voisins du Zero covers a wider range of numbers and is popular among experienced players.

Zero Spiel

The Zero Spiel bet covers the numbers located around the zero sector on the roulette wheel. Includes:

  • 031215263235

Tier

The Tier bet (or Tier du Cylindre) covers 12 numbers located in one section of the wheel, opposite the Voisins du Zero sector. Includes:

  • 5810111316232427303336
These numbers occupy approximately one-third of the wheel and create their own betting sector.

Orphelins

The Orphelins bet covers numbers that are not part of other large groups (sectors) on the wheel. This bet includes two segments:

  • 19142031
  • 61734
These numbers do not belong to either the Tier sector or Voisins du Zero, and the bet is placed on several different positions on the betting layout.
